"The Whole is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts"

As a trained scenic and costume designer, and then a professor of these subjects, Cassandra is keen to dream up designs and now creates a quilt. Her quilts might be called “modern” or an “art quilt.” Many of the patterns she creates are foundation paper pieced. Several quilts are in the permanent collection of the National Quilt Museum. She has lived in several Midwestern states. She has a blog, newsletter and is on Instagram and YouTube.

Timna is from a long line of quilters and studied Art History in college. She began long-arming in 2001 and now occupies a warehouse studio. Her quilts with circles evolve when sewing many independent blocks and then arranging them on a design wall. Each quilt has a self-assigned challenge. She pieces award-winning contemporary quilts with circles, maps and farm animals. She offers individual zoom workshops, has a blog and is on Instagram and YouTube.

Gloria began as a teacher and began quilting nearly 30 years ago. She travels extensively with her photographer husband to capture the stunning beauty of Australian landscapes and uses this inspiration to recreate their beauty in fabric. Her collage quilts are award-winning. Quilts also feature abstracts and architecture. Several books are published and she offers individual online workshops on her website. She is found on YouTube, as well.

"American Barn Quilts"

Suzi Parron is on the road full-time with her husband in an RV speaking to civic groups and quilt guilds. She has documented so many Barn Quilts she now has two books on this subject. We will “travel” with her and view photographs of over 100 quilts and hear some of their stories. Some are as intricate as our cloth quilts. When possible, she offers workshops to paint your own “quilt.” You can find Suzi’s postings on YouTube and Instagram.

Maria is an improvisational piecer of quilts with blocks arranged in a grid structure. Her cutting without a ruler produces original creations. Vintage and solid fabrics predominate her projects. She is offering online workshops for groups not connected to one particular guild. Her award-winning quilts have appeared all over this continent. She has a blog and is a prolific contributor to Instagram and YouTube.

Helen self-describes as an “extreme free motion machine quilter.” She has been a life-long artist, becoming a quilter after a couple decades. She uses her painterly talent to create whole cloth quilts and also does numerous applique quilts, for which she is award-winning. She offers an online block of the month quilt where painting rather than piecing is featured. Quilt subjects are varied including portraits and Australian themed. She can be found on Instagram and YouTube.

Sujata is a graphic designer with a calligraphy major and is originally from Mumbai, India. She seeks to capture the individuality of varied makers, using techniques of hand-turned applique and piecing. She draws inspiration more recently from the Gee’s Bend quilters and Godharis from India. However, her award-winning quilts are influenced by several cultures and are included in a recently published book. You can find her in a blog, on Instagram and YouTube.

"Mapping Narratives Using Fabric, Paint and Thread"

Valerie teaches architectural design and is also a mixed media quilter. She is intrigued by aerial views of landscapes and cities, and her quilts are realistic and evolving to be abstract as well. Imaginary landscapes are also explored. Valerie has many art quilts in private collections. She is offering an on demand workshop for a quilted map of a personal place, and her book is quite inspiring. You can find her and her award-winning quilts on Instagram and YouTube.

"Self Preservation of the Quilter"
Yvonne has been a physical therapist for 40 years and is board certified in orthopedic physical therapy - and yes, a quilter. Yvonne understands the stress we can impose on our body as we pursue our creative passion. Her program includes ergonomic and posture strategies for quilters with emphasis on the shoulders, shoulder blades and neck. The interactive lecture will highlight the common pitfalls of workstation setup with strategies for improvement. Ideal ergonomic positioning and posture will be demonstrated. Common patterns of muscle strength/ length and resting postural changes will be illustrated along with basic exercise concepts to restore balance.

Meeting will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church. Sarah’s formal study of art was in the area of visual arts for her undergraduate work and her emphasis in graduate school was in painting. Sarah learned to sew from her mother and learned to love geometry from her father. From her grandparents, who were great builders, painters, stitchers, weavers and gardeners, she learned that making things is one of the greatest pleasures in life. Sarah's quilts of her unique design are all pieced and then hand quilted. You can find interviews of Sarah on YouTube and many quilt pictures on Instagram.
