Meet One of Our Members!
Lucy Blasi is a new member of RQG (August 2015) who found the guild online while searching for charity projects. It all started with a birthday party she hosted for her teen daughter Sara and her friends. Their mothers were also invited and as they talked, an idea blossomed for a learning activity for the girls to enjoy. Since then, Lucy has worked to build a sewing club for the girls who have become known as the Sew Fabulous team since their formation in 2013. They have made several items over the years and are now starting to incorporate projects they make to be donated to charities devoted to comforting their recipients.
Growing up in Tonica, Illinois, Lucy was used to a sewing machine. Every woman in her family sewed, including herself, from a young age. But they were all making garments, except for one of her grandmothers who also quilted. But Lucy didn’t get bit by the quilting bug till long after – just last year.
A beginning quilter, Lucy laughs as she tells of joining the guild in time to work on the 2016 quilt show and being told to place a quilt next to the [monkey wrench, log cabin, Dutchman’s puzzle, flying geese, shooting star – pick one]. She didn’t know what anyone was talking about, she says, as they tossed around these crazy pattern names as if she knew what they meant. She realizes now she has a lot to learn and she is loving learning it. She’s intrigued by the whole idea of piecing and so far quilting is still a challenge that she is starting to overcome. Her first quilt appeared in the guild show.
Royal Neighbors of America granted funds for a charity event Lucy created, named Stitching for Comfort, through a program called “Difference Makers.” The program gave them seed money to buy fabric to make rag quilts for donation. Once her family and friends learned of Lucy’s and Sara’s plan, donations of fabric, accessories and volunteers came pouring in. The events were held in April (2016). Twenty-nine rag quilts were made and donated to various organizations locally.
Lucy is now the guild’s philanthropy co-chair with Kathleen Curtis, another new member.
Thanks Lucy!
