Meet One of Our Members!
Carol Wilhoit enjoys finding better ways to do things and it shows in her quilt making, especially in the planning she does before she begins. Here and there she has a larger quilt or two she’s made. But mostly she loves making small quilty things – bags, table runners, wall hangings, book covers -- which are everywhere in her home. She favors batik fabrics and has closely studied the work of Diane Gaudynski and Caryl Bryer Fallert, both of whom have greatly inspired her with their free-motion quilting. Whatever she creates is always closely quilted in a beautiful way.
She quilts, Carol says, because for her it combines both creativity and relaxation, a welcome respite from her busy hours at work. Yes, she owns a few antique quilts and some well-used scrappy ones made by her grandmother, but growing up in Seattle, in the 1970s Carol saw some patchwork aprons she liked and changed the pattern to suit herself. While in college, she bought a quilt book and an elderly friend gave her a lone star pattern, again piquing her interest in pattern modification. That was the beginning of her particular style of adapting patterns to conform to her vision of what a project ought to be.

Soon after that start as a quilter, she came to Illinois to study and to do her residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois Hospital. While a member of another guild, she moved to Naperville, learned about RQG and joined in 1998. A member of the Prairie Hearts Bee, she has taught many classes locally, most recently at Quilters Quest quilt shop in Woodridge. One of the puzzles Carol hopes to solve one day is the never-ending question of what makes some quilt design and fabric choices work beautifully and others not so much. Here’s hoping she shares that info when she discovers an answer.
Thanks, Carol!
