Every other year in conjunction with the bi-annual Gathering, the guild auctions off a quilt made by members. The quilt for the 2007 Gathering was won by a person who just purchased on ticket! Good things can happen when taking a chance!
Entitled "The Hobson Sisters Garden", it is a queen size, batik pieced, hand appliquéd, machine quilted, one of a kind quilt designed by guild member Chris Moline, a noted lecturer and quilt appraiser. Her title was inspired by both the guild’s theme for 2007 as well as Naperville’s 175th Anniversary of incorporation being celebrated during 2006. Chris Moline is one of the Charter members of the Guild and was the guild’s first president. A little known fact is that Hobson was one of the potential guild names considered during its founding.(Click image to enlarge) The flower appliqué patterns were designed by Chris and appliquéd and embroidered by members of the guild. The Quilting Queen and Boa bees coordinated and participated in the work by the guild. After it was pieced and hand appliquéd by members of the Riverwalk Guild, Julie Karlak did the beautiful, original design, machine quilting on a long arm machine. The Riverwalk Quilters Guild thanks all members who participated in its construction and feels that they can be justly proud of their work. Julie included these thoughts on the quilting: I designed the quilting to showcase the beautiful and intricate appliqué in the quilt top. I felt the background needed to be small to make the appliqué pop out. The outer border with leaf scroll was designed to illustrate and continue the flower theme. Simple scalloped quilting in the inner border was intended to soften the geometric elements of the quilt. Variegated thread was used to draw the eye to the edges of the quilt. I used Madeira's Polyneon thread in three colors and there is about 3,000 yards of thread covering the entire quilt! The batting was a cotton-poly blend from Quilters Dream. Tickets for the raffle quilt will go on sale in Naperville in December. The cost will be $1 each or six for $5. So that you can appreciate the effort that has gone into this quilt, we are including detail of the quilt, the appliqué, and the original quilting design done by Julie.
