Guild Philanthropy Projects

Our guild members generously make quilts, pillowcases and other handmade items to distribute to local charities and individuals as the need arises. A few of the charities we distribute to are

  • the Care Center at Edward Hospital, which exists to help children, teens and special needs adults who are known or suspected to be victims of sexual abuse;
  • the Sharing Connection of Lisle, who provide household items to low-income families helping them transform a bare apartment or house into a home;
  • the Hesed House in Aurora and their Transitional Living Community, which is a temporary dormitory-style home for families who are between homelessness and returning to an independent life working toward self improvement.

At each monthly guild meeting, Philanthropy has a table set up for collection of completed projects. Also kits of fabric and supplies are available to take home. Of course, you are encouraged to provide your own fabric too thus adding your own creativity to the project. If you don't feel like sewing on your own, find a friend and work on a project together. Involve your bee, Girl Scout troop, or if you are a teacher- involve your classroom. We all benefit and ultimately those in need will be comforted.

The January Party

To gain "admission" to our January New Year's party our Philanthropy committee asks for a food or paper goods donation to our Local Food Pantry, Loaves & Fishes in Naperville.

Annual Guild Sew-a-Thon

Once yearly, a special quilt and/or pillowcase Sew-A-Thon is held. At this event members bring fabric, thread, sewing machines and cutting implements to sew the evening away in a special effort to make items for children and needy adults. Philanthropy also has fabric, supplies and instructions available during the Sew-a-thon. This is a fun event and comes as close to the old fashioned "Quilting Bee" as it develops friendships among the members as well as items for charity.
