Sue Cortese

Lecture Description: Sue will discuss and demonstrate Shibori, which is the Japanese term for tied and bound resist dyeing techniques. While modern Shibori is done with lots of colors and different fabrics, traditional Japanese Shibori on cotton was mainly done with indigo. The contrast of the blue and white can give bold contrast or subtle shades depending on the technique used. See the example below.
About Sue: Sue Cortese is textile artist who lives in Holland, Michigan. As with any other artist, her work starts as a blank canvas, but for her that means white fabric. She has been creating sewn compositions with her dyed fabric, and quilting them since 1995. The combination of layers of pattern, as well as the texture that quilting stitches add to the work, keep her exploring. From start to finish, her work incorporates the many techniques she has learned over the years: dyeing and printing her own fabric, piecing and appliqué, machine and hand quilting, and various finishes. Sue also teaches various dyeing and quilting techniques. Her work has been displayed in quilt shows and art museums around the country. She is also a certified quilt judge through the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges and a regional representative of Studio Art Quilt Associates. website: http://www.selcfabrics.com |
